The Subcontractor Role in Building Better Cities
Today is the start of ‘Urban October’, a month led initiative by UN-Habitat to raise awareness of the challenges and opportunities facing our towns and cities. It began in 2014 and brings together people, organisations and communities to talk about how we can create more inclusive, resilient and sustainable urban environments. It includes World Habitat Day and World Cities Day, with a focus on turning ideas about better cities into practical action.
For the construction industry, that conversation is not just about large infrastructure projects or new developments. It also happens inside the buildings we work on every day. And for subcontractors, particularly those working in fit-out, there are many opportunities to make a difference. It starts with simple decisions. How much material do we order? Can we reduce waste? Can something being removed be reused rather than thrown away? Can we reduce unnecessary packaging and deliveries? Can we install something in a way that makes it easier to maintain, repair or adapt in the future? These decisions might seem small, but across thousands of projects they can have a significant impact.
As an industry, we all have a role to play in creating better places to live and work. Subcontractors are no exception. In fact, the people delivering the work are often in the best position to spot where improvements can be made.
