Giving Back to Nature at High Woods Country Park 🌿

Last week, we swapped our desks for the great outdoors as the team headed to High Woods Country Park in Colchester for a day of volunteering with The Conservation Volunteers (TCV).

Our mission for the day was to help improve the park's heathland by clearing areas that had become overrun with bracken, an invasive fern that can quickly dominate the landscape. Removing the bracken creates the space and light needed for the park's endangered heather to thrive, helping to protect this important habitat for years to come.

Alongside the conservation work, we also helped clear vegetation from around several of the park's wayfinding markers, making them much easier for visitors to spot and helping people enjoy everything High Woods has to offer.

Before getting started, Michael and Sophie from TCV gave us an insight into the history of the park, the importance of heathland conservation and why ongoing volunteer work plays such a vital role in protecting local wildlife. It was fascinating to learn just how much difference a day's work can make.

Armed with gloves, loppers and plenty of enthusiasm, we spent the day working together across the woodland, clearing bracken, cutting back overgrowth and enjoying a welcome change of scenery. It was fantastic to step away from our screens, spend time as a team and contribute to a project that benefits both nature and the local community.

The heather should soon be bursting into bloom, and it's incredibly rewarding to know we played a small part in helping it flourish.

A huge thank you to Michael and Sophie from The Conservation Volunteers for welcoming us, sharing their knowledge throughout the day and all the amazing work they do to care for our local green spaces.

We're already looking forward to our next volunteering day
